The Recent IRS Updates Regarding the 1095-C Extension

IRS updates on computer

Last month, we received IRS updates surrounding, Notice 2019-63, which extends the due date for furnishing Forms 1095-C and 1095-B by one month under the Affordable Care Act’s employer reporting requirement. This, however, does not mean that due dates for filing forms with the IRS will be extended and/or impacted.

What does this mean?

For insurers and small self-funded employers, this notice gives a simpler option for giving Form 1095-B to individuals. Specifically, under certain conditions, the business can post a notice on their website stating that the form is available upon request so that the business does not need to print and email the form to each enrollee who received coverage in the 2019 year.

Furnishing deadlines:

Under Notice 2019-63, employers now have until March 2, 2020 to furnish 2019 Form 1095-C and Form 1095-B, if applicable to their employees and individuals.

Filing deadlines:

The most important thing for employers to remember with this extension is that it does not affect filing deadlines. The deadline for filing copies of these forms remains unchanged.

  • By paper: February 28, 2020
  • Electronically: March 31, 2020.

Note: The extended due date applies automatically.
